Sasan Gir (Gir National Park)

The Gir National Park, about 60 kilometers from Junagadh in Gujarat's Saurashtra region, is one of India's oldest reserves and is synonymous with the majestic Asiatic Lion. This park, the only place in India where you can see this animal, is committed to saving an endangered species on the verge of extinction at the beginning of the twenty-first century by providing it with a more secure habitat.

Most terrain consists of rugged hills, high ridges, densely forested valleys, broad grassland plateaus, and isolated hilltops. There are also areas of open scrub and savannah-type grassland in the park. This diversity of vegetation supports a wide range of animals.

• Gir National Park is most prevalent between December and March. Alternatively, come during the hot and dry season (March through May), when animals gather near the edge of the river and are easily identified.
• Take a morning safari to see the lions at their most active. Lions sleep during the day and are more difficult to spot on a mid-day tour.
• Gir National Park is open from October to June, with jeep tours beginning at 6:30 a.m., 9 a.m., and 3 p.m. The Gir Interpretation Zone is open year-round, from Thursday to Tuesday (closed Wednesday), from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. and from 3 p.m. until dusk (around 5 p.m.).
• Safari reservations can be made up to three months in anticipation and 48 hours before a planned tour.
• When you reveal your permit, the eight safari routes are digitally assigned at random. Vehicles must travel in the same direction along the route without reversing or deviating.
• Gir National Park e-permits are issued per vehicle with up to six occupants. The price varies by day of the week, with weekends and national holidays being the most pricey.
